Use the Average Grade Calculator By Letters

To calculate your average grade using our grade calculator, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Grade Type: Set it to “Letters.” Now the calculator will allow you to put letter grades like A, B, or C, instead of percentages or points.
  2. Your Grade For Tests: In the first box, select the letter grade you got on your assignment, test, or exam. This could be anything from A+ to F.
  3. Put Label (Optional): You can name the tests, assignments, projects, or quizzes to organize them better.
  4. Add Weight (If Needed): If your grades have weights or credits, enter the weight for that grade. Write weights as percentages.
    • Tip! If an assignment counts for 50% of your final grade, you can enter it as 0.5. If all your grades are equally important (unweighted), put 1 in all.
  5. Repeat for All Your Grades: Keep going, adding more grades and weights as needed. Each time you fill in the last box, a new row will pop up for you to enter the next grade.
  6. Check Your Average Grade: Once you’ve entered all your grades, your overall letter grade will show at the bottom. This is your final average.

Calculate Average Grades By Letters By Yourself!

If you feel anxious to calculate by yourself, then it’s not too hard. It just takes time. Here’s how you can calculate average grades by using letters:

  1. Convert Your Letter Grades to Points

Each letter grade has a point value (See the above table). Convert following the above grading system table.

  1. Add Up Your Grade Points

Let’s say you have the following grades:

  • B+ in English (3.3 points)
  • C in Math (2.0 points)
  • A- in Science (3.7 points)
  • D+ in History (1.3 points)

First, you convert each grade to its point value and then add them all together:

3.3 (English) + 2.0 (Math) + 3.7 (Science) + 1.3 (History) = 10.3

  1. Divide by the Number of Grades

Now, you just divide the total points by how many grades you have. In this case, there are 4 grades:

10.3 ÷ 4 = 2.575

So, your average grade point is about 2.6, which is close to a C+.

Note!

You need to switch up the weighted average grade a bit. Let’s say your grades are:

  • A in Math (40% of your grade)
  • B+ in English (30%)
  • C in Science (30%)

So, now first convert the grades into points, then multiply by the percentage that each grade is worth:

  • Math: 4.0 (A) × 0.40 = 1.6
  • English: 3.3 (B+) × 0.30 = 0.99
  • Science: 2.0 (C) × 0.30 = 0.6

Lastly, add up the weighted scores:

1.6 (Math) + 0.99 (English) + 0.6 (Science) = 3.19

This means your weighted GPA is 3.19, which is close to a B+.

Conclusion

Overall, calculating your average grades with letters is easy and quick. We hope you got the grade you were expecting or better! Just Keep in mind that getting an F grade just means you need to improve. You can use our average grade calculator using letters, percentages, or points.
